Backes & Müller BM20 active controlled speaker with rosewood vaneer.
Elegance, that is probably not the first thing that you associate with german design. (Ok, some claasic cars are all right...) However, the exception proves the rule. Unlike the Magnat Transpulsar pictured, this one is true elegance. And it is completely German. Made in West Germany in 1984.
I bet the carpenters doing the vaneer artwork were proud of thier work. I have never seen such obviously selected and celebrated art of production. Unlike the Klipsch and JBL mass production, at Backes & Müller all details of the speakers were seen. And still today, When entering the room and seing the vaneer, it brings me joy. But it´s not only the woodwork that is special on this remarkable speaker.
I first listened to the BM20 and the complete BM product range at probably the one, that made Backes &Müller great in the 80ies. When they were small and unknown. It happened in the former West German Capital, Bonn. I first met Johannes Krings who was convinced that active controlled speakers (i get back to the active and especially controlled part later) were the only option to listen to music. He sold active speakers only, no power amps anywere in the studio. He did an extremly good job, got famous all over Germany and made Backes and Müller popular by perfectly presenting these gems in a very personal and charming eviroment in his city villa studio in Bonn. Not to mention all the spanish wines served.... if i hear Backes & Müller, I see Johannes Krings pictured in the vaneer. Johannes Kring and Backes & Müller where the same, that´s what many people and I thought. A legend.
